Personalised Mountadam Five-Fifty Chardonnay 2018 12.5% 750ml
Expert Review:
Angus Hughson- 93 points, Mountadam made their name with Chardonnay and this is a cracking value wine that follows the family line. It is seriously complex – layers of citrus and melon fruits are given additional interest with vanillin and almond oak complexity. It is also a nod to both the old-fashioned and modern Chardonnay style on the palate – there is generous and complex fruit with oak well balanced by crisp acidity, and even little flavour hints of nougat thrown in the mix. There is good balance too that makes it delicious now and the wine is close to peak, especially with some salt and pepper squid.
Established in 1972 as one of Australia's pioneer Chardonnay producers, Mountadam was founded by the late David Wynn, without question one of the most significant contributors to the Australian wine industry and an important part of the Mountadam story. In selecting the land for the Mountadam vineyard, Wynn was the first to recognise the potential of a cool, elevated site to produce wines of great elegance and structure, and chose an area high above the Eden Valley, which he named High Eden. At 570 metres above sea level, Mountadam is still to this day one of Australia's most elevated vineyards. As of 2005, the vineyard has been owned by South Australian businessman David Brown, who has made significant investment in vineyard improvement and expansion.
